This is one of the most entertaining books that I have ever read. Nobody writes like Fannie Flagg and true to form, this book is no exception. She is the author of Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café, Welcome To The World Baby Girl, A Redbird Christmas, Standing In The Rainbow, and I Can’t Wait To Get To Heaven, Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man. The characters in this book are heartwarming and endearing not to mention hilarious and will never fail to keep you laughing throughout the entire book. Many times, I could see bits and pieces of each personality in myself.
The story takes place in Birmingham, Alabama with chapters in the past, present, and future. Maggie (Margaret) Fortenberry, a former Miss Alabama and 2nd runner up to Miss America turned Real Estate Agent for Red Mountain Realty, finds things in her life depressing. Ever since Hazel Whisenknot, founder of Red Mountain Realty, died 5 years ago business has gone from bad to worse and the future isn’t looking much better. Just when things seem completely hopeless, Maggie comes up with the perfect plan. Humm (To tell you anymore would spoil the plot of this story)
What does a Coal Magistrate named Edward Crocker, Crestview, a prestigious home overlooking the City of Birmingham and a skeleton in a storage trunk in the attic have to do with this book? The only way to find out is to read the book.
In finishing this review I would like to introduce the cast of characters that make this book so heartwarming.
Kind and charming Maggie Fortenberry former Miss Alabama and 2nd runner up to Miss America turned real estate agent.
Hazel Whisenknott, a 3 foot 4 inch little person and founder of Read Mount Realty who has passed away 5 years ago.
Brenda Peoples, black and fighting a weight problem, who is Maggie’s best friend and real estate partner who is going to run for mayor.
Babs Bingington, Real Estate Agent and owner of her own Realty office also referred to as “The Beast of Birmingham” notorious for being unscrupulous and underhanded in her real estate dealings.
Ethel Clipp, the 88 year old Office Manager of Red Mountain Realty nicknamed the “Purple Flash” always looking at how the world has changed since her day. She is opinionated, and never loss for words. (My favorite)
This is comedy and mystery at its best and will keep you laughing and trying to figure out just what the heck is really going on. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
