Stephen Clarke is a British Journalist who has written comedy sketches for the BBC and is also the author of A Year In the Merde, Merde Happens, Talk to the Snail and 1000 Years Of Annoying The French which is not yet available in the USA at this time.
In The Merde For Love is the sequel to A Year In The Merde. It is the continuation of an Englishman, Paul West’s adventures and struggles to figure out all the complexities that surround life while living in France, starting up a Tea Room, still searching for the perfect mademoiselle and finding that one true l’amour eternal.
The first several chapters of the book take you on an two week trip with current girlfriend, Florence, the accident in his girlfriends father’s car on a roundabout, dealing with the gendarmes, and his first meeting with Florence’s mum which turns out to be a disaster. The following chapters deal with the opening of his Tea Room near the Champs-Elysees the dealings with the architecture, builders, and the cast of characters he employs.
Throughout this entire adventure he never loses contact with Alexa, a woman who he previously was in a relationship with, cheated on, regretted and his desire to get her back.
This book is hilarious with all sorts of frustrations on how very difficult it can be to work and live among the French. It is not without some very “off colored” remarks and if you are a person who is easily offended then this book may not be for you. I find Stephen Clarke to be a superb and clever writer with a wonderful sense of humor that truly captures the spirit of living and working in France.
