As any reader knows, books come into your life at exactly the right moment. Sometimes they’re given to us by a thoughtful friend only to be put aside for any one of a number of reasons, and then, years later, picked up and avidly read. The timing just wasn’t right the first time.
When it first came out in 2006, I happened upon the now much celebrated book by author Sara Gruen, “Water for Elephants,” by happy accident. I was looking for a well-written story to distract and entertain me. Little did I know how the story’s characters would engage me, and the writing make me feel like an integral part of an era and life totally foreign to me. Despite my unfamiliarity with the world in which the story takes place and the times depicted, the universal metaphors of water and train tracks could easily resonate with me, and so they did, on many levels.
Since reading “Water for Elephants,” whenever I see someone reading the book while having coffee at Starbucks, or browsing through the stacks at Barnes & Noble and holding a copy of the book in contemplation of their choice, a twinge of envy courses through me for I know that they have yet to become enthralled for the first time with this tale of choices, destiny, moral character, and love.
Inevitably, it’s been made into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, directed by Francis Lawrence. If the tone and feeling in the trailer is a portend of what’s to come, it looks like it captures the imagery of the book quite well, but there’s no telling how well it weaves the tapestry of the characters. That I’ll have to see for myself.
