Book Trivia

April 21, 2011  by Little Miss Can't Be Wrong

Sad news, Gatsby lovers.  The house that is believed to be the inspiration for Daisy Buchanan's home in The Great Gatsby has been slated for demolition. I know that not all beautiful historical old buildings can be saved.  I really do.  Especially when they cost roughly  $4,200 per day to maintain.

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." - f.s.f. the great gatsby
But the thing of it is, I kind of had my heart set on living here someday.  I emailed boyfriend the information this morning, letting him know that I fully expect him to make an offer by the end of the day to save this gorgeous old home.

I told him we could be like George and Mary Bailey, in It's A Wonderful Life and we could restore and refurbish the old place.  t's been about two hours and I haven't heard from him yet.  I'm sure he's mentally emptying his shark bank and counting his Monopoly money to make my dreams come true!

News reports are conflicting, of course, of whether Fitzgerald was ever even at this gorgeous Gold Coast mansion.  I like to think it's a real place, though... and so let's ignore conflicting reports (who likes naysayers, anyway??) and take a look at some photos from an old real estate brochure (found on Old Long Island

"seeking, a little wistfully, for the dramatic turbulence of some irrecoverable football game." - f.s.f the great gatsby

"A new world, material without being real, where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drifted fortuitously about...like that ashen, fantastic figure gliding toward him through the amorphous trees." - f.s.f. the great gatsby

"I belong to another generation..." -f.s.f. the great gatsby
"I've been drunk for about a week now, and I thought it might sober me up to sit in a library." - f.s.f. the great gatsby
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." - f.s.f. the great gatsby
"I KNOW. I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything…Sophisticated - God, I'm sophisticated." - f.s.f. the great gatsby
After seeing Jen Ross' photography of the decapitated mansion, I know it will take a lot of work.  But I think Sequel and I can do it.  (P.S. don't look at the Jen Ross photos unless you want to be deeeeeepresssed.)

With a little help from you, of course.

There's about eighty jilliondy bedrooms, a greenhouse and guest quarters.  Plus a seven car garage.  Who wants to come with me to live in Daisy's mansion?  First to RSVP gets dibs on a good parking spot!

"Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." - f.s.f. the great gatsby
