Author Interview L.B. Dunbar

Avid drinker of Coca-Cola, L.B. Dunbar loves the sweet things in life. Her affair with all things romantic began with her first book at the tender age of six: Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One can never forget her first! From there, the reading journey includes a deep love of fairy tales, medieval knights, regency debauchery, and alpha males. She loves a deep belly laugh and a strong hug. Occasionally, she has the energy of a Jack Russell terrier. Accused, yes, that’s the correct word, of having an overactive imagination; to her benefit, such an imagination works well. Author of over a dozen novels, she’s created small town worlds, rock star mayhem, and MMA chaos. Her other duties in life include: mother to four growing children and wife to the one and only.

L.B. Dunbar here to tell you a little bit about myself and my latest release: The History in Us. The seed was planted after my first book published in June 2014. Sound Advice tells the story of Katie Carter as a child in a small town. It’s a sweet, sexy romance about her single father, but The History in Us is all about her as an adult. She has moved to Chicago (my home town) and is obtaining her master’s degree when she encounters a man from her past, who was once a boy she kissed. The History in Us – the title – comes from the history these two shared and how it has made them who they are. Writing this book was a promise to myself. After readers asked for Katie’s story, I tried and failed several times to tell it. Determination always gets the best of me, and so, Katie’s story took hold until it stuck. It released June 2 – the anniversary date of her father’s book (Sound Advice).


My writing style is rather unconventional. I write what I want, when I want. I’m not trend-writer, nor a trendsetter. When the story hits, I write. Most of the time, it consumes me. Sometimes I plot, most times I don’t. I just know the general story – how it starts, how it will end. The hard part is the in between. Sometimes characters take me on a new route, and that can be frustrating, but it always works out in the end. Advice I’d give new writers is two-fold: write to please YOU first, and listen to your gut. I’ve taken so many risks in regards to marketing, peer groups, attending events, etc. If your gut says don’t do it, listen…the universe it talking to you.

And the universe spoke to me, that’s how I started writing. I saw a man I didn’t know, interacting with his daughter, and a story sparked. I thought it would only sit on my computer, but then, a year later, I saw him again, and another year later again, and finally I decided the universe was telling me something. Publish the damn book! I did, and I haven’t looked back. Do I consider myself a writer? That’s a hard question. I think of myself more as a story teller. I like to make things happily ever after for everyone. Is writing a career? To me, career means living off the income you make, so no, writing is not a career for me. But it’s not a hobby either, it’s a habit. I write because I need to get the story out. Some days I actually get crabby when I can’t write. It’s weird. The hardest part of writing a book isn’t writing it. It’s the marketing, and that’s a whole other interview!

Something unique about me is I’m another personality. I also write as elda lore – paranormal romance. I love it! In paranormal you can make people do anything, and it’s all magical, and fantasy, and sigh…My genre is a little unusually as that currently I’m only writing Greek myths modernized. It’s just plain fun writing. What’s also great about this is, I love fantasy but was afraid to write it. I didn’t think I could be creative enough, but who am I kidding? I’ve been accused of having an over active imagination. So, when another author said, just try it, I did. I have no regrets. I love my modern descendants.
