In A PUG’S TALE, four-legged pugs are taking over New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art!
Hope McNeill has worked at the MET for years, but this is the first time she's been able to bring her pug, Max, inside officially. Previously she's had to smuggle him in her Sherpa bag.
The occasion: "Pug Night" a pug-a-luscious party in recognition of a very generous donor. Max and his pug friends are having a ball stalking hors d'oeuvres, getting rambunctious and making Hope wonder if this will be the last time she gets to bring Max to the museum. But when a prized painting goes missing that night, the MET needs Hope's and Max's help. In her hunt for the thief, Hope searches for answers with a mysterious detective, a larger-than-life society heiress, a lady with a shih tzu and her intuitive canine, Max. With any luck, she'll find some inspiration on her trips to Pug Hill before the investigation goes straight to the dogs.
Max, Hope’s pug, yet not really her pug, is officially Hope’s boyfriend’s pug, while Ben’s off doing good works in Africa. And although she misses Ben, Hope is happy to have Max’s company. She even enjoys taking him to work with her most days against company policy. Her coworkers don’t mind Max, and she is almost completely over her infatuation with her boss, Elliot. But things begin to go very wrong when the valuable painting turns up missing and a well-done copy put in its place. Hope, along with Elliot and other Museum employees fall under suspicion and paranoia creeps into her life. The only way she can clear her name is to find the thief herself, and the only one she really trusts to assist her in the search has pop eyes, a flat face, sheds and snores when he sleeps with his tongue hanging out. That’s right Hope’s crime-solving partner is none other than Max, the pug.
The book is a delightful passage through New York City’s art world and dog scene. Hope’s animated inner dialogue keeps the humor going as she tries to solve the mystery. Characters are well developed, especially Max, the pug and that’s no easy feat, considering he doesn’t talk. There are plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing all the way to the end. And perhaps like me, you will be surprised by who in fact turns out to be the thief!
A PUG’S TALE is a standalone sequel to author, Alison Pace’s previous novel, PUG HILL. Pace has an easy-breezy writing style and chances are you’ll finish A PUG’S TALE in one sitting. I found myself laughing out-loud several times, as I pictured Hope and Max scurrying around Manhattan trying to solve the who dunnit. I also appreciated Hope’s sense of optimism, even in the midst of some big challenges. Ultimately she recognizes how fortunate she is to have Max in her life, and that’s what matters. As a dog owner I concur, my shih tzu Sassy certainly makes my soul whole. I can’t imagine life without her.
A PUG’S TALE has a little something for everyone, dog lovers, art lovers, mystery lovers, fiction lovers.
